On my own journey I love finding things in nature and bringing them into my life to see daily. In my opinion your house should be a place you find joy in the things you like to look at. Wreaths have been used for thousands of years as a way to add warmth and the season whatever it maybe inside your home. They were first noted in Greece and Rome: Wreaths were worn as crowns to signify victory and achievement in athletic games and military conquests. Symbolism: They were also used as a symbol of importance and authority for leaders and were hung on doors to wish for a good harvest. Evergreen symbolism: Ancient cultures celebrated evergreens for their ability to stay green through winter, and wreaths made of them symbolized life, death, and rebirth, as well as eternal life. Winter solstice: Wreaths were used in celebrations like the Roman festival of Saturnalia to wish each other good fortune. Protective symbol: In medieval Europe, wreaths of holly were used to protect homes from witchcraft and evil spirits.
Later on they were adopted by Christians:
The Advent wreath, a popular Christmas decoration, originated in Germany and became a symbol for the four weeks leading up to Christmas.
The circular shape of the wreath was adopted to represent the eternity of God, with candles signifying hope, peace, joy, and love.
Now Wreaths have a more modern tradition that of welcoming on a door or above a hearth and with ceremonies for honor.
Door decoration:
The practice of hanging wreaths on doors for the holidays, now a common sign of welcome, is believed to have evolved from the ancient Roman and medieval traditions.
National and cultural use:
Wreaths continue to be used for various purposes, from honoring veterans in the United States to being worn in ceremonies in other cultures like the Ukrainian "vinok" or the Hawaiian "lei".
I believe a wreath can be hung almost anywhere, and in fact have many in my own home. I love the practice of finding branches, sticks, grasses, flowers and more in nature to signify various things in life. The season, welcoming, warmth and that life is a cycle and we are part of that. It makes sense that someone who loves to help people on their journey would find joy in making wreaths. If you would like a custom made wreath, I am happy to discuss this with you and get a feel for what you would like. I make much more than wreaths, I also make door hangings, centerpieces, door garland and more.
